{"id":2709,"date":"2022-04-28T04:27:29","date_gmt":"2022-04-28T03:27:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=2709"},"modified":"2022-04-28T04:30:41","modified_gmt":"2022-04-28T03:30:41","slug":"ailing-journalists-in-irans-prisons-need-urgent-un-action-rsf-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=2709","title":{"rendered":"Ailing journalists in Iran\u2019s prisons need urgent UN action, RSF says"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is alarmed about imprisoned journalists in Iran who are denied medical care when they are ill, and calls for swift action by the UN special rapporteur to ensure that the Iranian authorities respect their obligations regarding the treatment of prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The victims include\u00a0<strong>Narges Mohammadi<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Alieh Motalebzadeh<\/strong>, two women journalists who were arrested at their Tehran homes while on medical furlough from prison on 12 April. They were taken to Tehran\u2019s Evin prison and were then transferred to\u00a0Qarchak women\u2019s prison. Mohammadi was deprived of her medicine for a week, including the pills she is supposed to take every day since undergoing a heart operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After being returned to prison, Motalebzadeh \u2013 a photojournalist who is also vice-president of the Press Freedom Defence Association \u2013 wrote an open letter to judicial system chief\u00a0Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei\u00a0denouncing her arrest \u201cwithout a legal warrant\u201d and her persecution by officials working for the intelligence ministry and for Amin Vaziri, the deputy prosecutor responsible for prisoners of conscience at Evin prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she has served a third of her sentence, the law says she should have been released but instead the regime prefers to \u201ccrack down on the resistance in prison by allowing sick prisoners to die,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 23 April, Mohammadi and Motalebzadeh were notified that they are now subject to a \u201cmedical furlough ban for six and three months, respectively\u201d and that a complaint has been brought against them by the Iranian prisons organisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The victims of mistreatment and neglect in Iran\u2019s prisons also include\u00a0<strong>Alireza Saghafi<\/strong>, a freelance journalist and member of the Iranian Writers\u2019 Association who used to edit\u00a0<em>Rah Ayandeh<\/em>, a magazine closed in 2010, and\u00a0<em>Naghd Noo<\/em>, also now closed. He was transferred from Kachooie prison in the city of Karaj to a nearby hospital with high blood pressure on 21 April, only to be returned to his prison cell a few hours later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrested in Karaj on 14 March along with several other participants in an event to mark dissident writer&nbsp;<strong>Samad Shabani<\/strong>\u2019s death, the 69-year-old Saghafi was taken to Kachooie prison to serve the one-year jail sentence he received from a Karaj court in September 2019 for \u201canti-government propaganda.\u201d His family reports that, ever since his arrest, he has been suffering not only from high blood pressure but also constant fatigue linked to his age and the prison food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reza Khandan Mahabadi<\/strong>, a 60-year-old journalist who is also a member of the Iranian Writers\u2019 Association, was also forced to\u00a0return to his prison cell\u00a0on 5 April despite still having respiratory problems since being hospitalised in early January with a severe case of Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A third member of the Iranian Writers\u2019 Association,\u00a0<strong>Baktash Abtin<\/strong>,\u00a0died on 8 January\u00a0as a result of not being treated promptly when he caught Covid-19 in Tehran\u2019s Evin prison.
