Police received \u2018credible information\u2019 about a threat to the lives of journalists<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran\u2019s most senior diplomat in Britain was summoned to the Foreign Office<\/a> after police received \u201ccredible information\u201d about a threat to the lives of journalists in the UK, the Government<\/a> said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Secretary<\/a> James Cleverly said he ordered officials to call in the Iranian<\/a> charge d\u2019affaires to make clear \u201cintimidation of any kind\u201d towards members of the press would not be tolerated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Metropolitan Police<\/a> have contacted a number of UK-based journalists in recent years, having received credible information about a threat to their lives, according to the Foreign Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I summoned the Iranian representative today to make clear that we do not tolerate threats to life and intimidation of any kind towards journalists, or any individual, living in the UK<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is understood the meeting with the Iranian diplomat, Mehdi Hosseini Matin, took place on Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Mr Cleverly said: \u201cThe UK will always stand up to threats from foreign nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI summoned the Iranian representative today to make clear that we do not tolerate threats to life and intimidation of any kind towards journalists, or any individual, living in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes after Iran International, a UK-based Persian-language news channel, said two of its team had been notified of a rise in threats towards them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe UK Met<\/a> Police have now formally notified both journalists that these threats represent an imminent and significant risk to their lives and those of their families,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The channel added that other staff members have \u201calso been informed directly\u201d by the Met of \u201cseparate threats\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conservative<\/a> MP Bob Blackman warned MPs<\/a> of \u201ccredible threats\u201d to British-Iranian journalists in the UK in the House of Commons<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MP for Harrow East urged the British Government<\/a> to proscribe the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n
