More than 40 people have been killed in Iran during the past week, including two teenagers, the UN human rights office, OHCHR,\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development came amid ongoing nationwide protests sparked by the death in custody of Jina Mahsa Amini. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 22-year-old from Iran\u2019s Kurdistan region was arrested by Iran\u2019s so-called \u201cmorality police\u201d on 13 September for not wearing her hijab properly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to\u00a0OHCHR<\/a>, thousands have been detained throughout the country for joining peaceful protests.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unholy charges<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt least six people connected to the protests have been sentenced to death on charges of \u2018moharebeh\u2019, or \u2018waging war against God\u2019, or \u2018efsad-e fel-arz\u2019, or \u2018corruption on earth\u2019, said <\/a>spokesperson Jeremy Laurence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA growing number of people, including Iranian celebrities and sportswomen and men who have expressed support for the protests, have been summoned or arrested\u201d, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to OHCHR, security officers reportedly responded \u201cforcefully\u201d to demonstrations in several mainly Kurdish locations on Monday evening, including Javanrud and Saqqez, Ms. Amini\u2019s hometown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two 16-year-old boys were among six people killed over the weekend, according to the UN rights office, which noted that more than 300 people have lost their lives, including 40 children, since nationwide protests erupted on 16 September. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families denied bodies of relatives<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

OHCHR also reiterated concerns that the authorities have refused to release the bodies of the dead to their families, or making their release \u201cconditional\u201d on not speaking to the media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith respect to bodies not being returned to their families, of course that\u2019s of grave concern to us\u201d, said Mr. Laurence.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is the motive behind that, I\u2019m not sure. But the families have the right to have the bodies of their loved ones returned to them. It\u2019s cruel that they\u2019re not\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Laurence noted that the security forces\u2019 approach had hardened to protesters, who have been killed in 25 of Iran\u2019s 31 provinces, including more than 100 in Sistan and Baluchistan.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged the authorities to address people\u2019s demands for \u201cequality, dignity and rights\u201d \u2013 instead of using disproportionate force against demonstrators.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe lack of accountability for gross human rights violations in Iran remains persistent and is contributing to the growing grievances\u201d, said the OHCHR spokesperson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian authorities have also reported that a number of security force personnel have been killed since the start of the protests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
