The United Nations on Tuesday underlined its condemnation of capital punishment following Iran’s execution of a young man who was sentenced to death in connection with widespread protests.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mohammad Ghobadlou, 23, who reportedly had a mental health condition, was arrested in September 2022 for running over a policeman and killing him during a demonstration near the capital, Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thousands of people nationwide took to the street after the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody<\/a> earlier that month. She had been detained by Iran\u2019s morality police who accused her of wearing her headscarf improperly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Ghobadlou was charged with \u201ccorruption on Earth\u201d and sentenced to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against capital punishment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe continue to stand against and condemn the use of the death penalty,\u201d said UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric, responding to a reporter\u2019s question during his daily briefing from New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four experts appointed by the UN Human Rights Council<\/a> also strongly condemned the execution of Mr. Ghobadlou, who had \u201ca long-term psychological disability\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They issued a statement<\/a> urging Iran to respect international law and stop the \u201chorrific execution\u201d of protestors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Access to lawyers denied<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are alarmed by reports of unfair trial proceedings in the case of Mr. Ghobadlou, as well as in other cases, which fell far short of due process and fair trial standards required by international human rights law by which Iran is bound,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
