{"id":3859,"date":"2025-01-24T09:59:05","date_gmt":"2025-01-24T09:59:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=3859"},"modified":"2025-01-24T09:59:06","modified_gmt":"2025-01-24T09:59:06","slug":"the-finalised-resolution-adopted-by-the-european-parliament-at-its-full-plenary-on-thursday-23-january-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=3859","title":{"rendered":"The finalised resolution adopted by the European Parliament at its full plenary on Thursday 23 January 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>TEXTS ADOPTED<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a><strong>P10_<\/strong><strong>TA(<\/strong><strong>2025)<\/strong><strong>000<\/strong><strong>4<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a><strong>Systematic repression of human rights in Iran, notably the cases of&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Pakhshan<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Azizi<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Wrisha<\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong>Moradi<\/strong><strong>, and the taking of EU citizens as hostages<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a><strong>European Parliame<\/strong><strong>nt resolution of 23 January 2025<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;on the systematic repression of human rights in Iran, notably the cases of&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Pakhshan<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Azizi<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Wrisha<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Moradi<\/strong><strong>, and the taking of EU citizens as hostages<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a><\/a><strong>(2025\/2511(RSP))<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a><em>The European Parliament<\/em>,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013\u200bhaving regard to its previous resolutions on Iran,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2013\u200bhaving regard to Rules 150(5) and 136(4) of its Rules of Procedure,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A.\u200bwhereas the human rights situation in Iran has significantly worsened, with a sharp rise in executions, including over 900 individuals in 2024 alone, many of whom were women, political dissidents and individuals connected to the protests sparked by the murder of&nbsp;JinaMahsa&nbsp;Amini;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>B.\u200bwhereas Kurdish activists, social worker&nbsp;Pakhshan&nbsp;Aziziand advocate for women\u2019s rights&nbsp;Verisheh&nbsp;(Wrisha)&nbsp;Moradi,&nbsp;who fought ISIS in Kurdistan,&nbsp;were sentenced to death for \u2018armed rebellion against the state\u2019; whereas they were denied a fair trial and subjected to torture and solitary confinement;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C.\u200bwhereas in January&nbsp;2025 the Supreme Court of Iran upheld a death sentence against&nbsp;Pakhshan&nbsp;Azizi&nbsp;and others;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>D.\u200bwhereas dozens of innocent EU nationals have been arbitrarily detained in Iran, without access to fair trials, as part of Iran\u2019s broader strategy of hostage diplomacy;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a><\/a>1.\u200bDenounces the Iranian regime\u2019s unrestrained repression of human rights, in particular the targeting of women activists; strongly condemns the death sentence against&nbsp;Pakhshan&nbsp;Azizi&nbsp;and&nbsp;Wrisha&nbsp;Moradi;&nbsp;demands that Iran immediately and unconditionally release all unjustly imprisoned human rights defenders and political prisoners, including&nbsp;Pakhshan&nbsp;Azizi,&nbsp;Wrisha&nbsp;Moradi&nbsp;and at least 56 other political prisoners on death row;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2.\u200bReiterates its strong opposition to the death penalty and calls on the Iranian Government to introduce an immediate moratorium on and abolish it;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3.\u200bCalls for the EU and its Member States to increase support for Iranian human rights defenders and expresses its full support and solidarity with Iranians united in the \u2018Woman, Life, Freedom\u2019&nbsp;movement;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4.\u200bUrges the Iranian authorities to immediately release, safely repatriate and drop all charges against EU nationals, including Olivier&nbsp;Grondeau, C\u00e9cile Kohler, Jacques Paris and&nbsp;Ahmadreza&nbsp;Djalali; strongly condemns Iran\u2019s use of hostage diplomacy; calls for the EU and its Member States to undertake joint diplomatic efforts and work collectively towards their release;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5.\u200bStrongly condemns the murder of&nbsp;Jamshid&nbsp;Sharmahd; urges the Islamic regime in Iran to provide details of the circumstances of his death and for his remains to&nbsp;be immediately returned&nbsp;to his family;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6.\u200bCondemns the Iranian regime\u2019s systemic suppression of human rights movements and persecution of minorities, including Kurds,&nbsp;Baluchis, Christians, facing persecution after conversion, and Baha\u2019is, all of them facing ethnic and religious discrimination, arrest and violations of fundamental rights aimed at silencing dissent;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.\u200bReiterates its call on the Council to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation and to extend EU sanctions to all those responsible for human rights violations, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, President&nbsp;Masoud&nbsp;Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief&nbsp;Gholam-Hossein&nbsp;Mohseni-Eje\u2019i, Prosecutor-General Mohammad&nbsp;Movahedi-Azad and Judge&nbsp;Iman&nbsp;Afshari;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>8.\u200bUrges the Iranian authorities to provide the UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran and the UN fact-finding mission with full, unimpeded access to enact their mandates;
