He was also arrested in February 2019.

Seyyed Adnan Mousavi Ghabishavi, born in 1996, also from Shadegan, was similarly arrested in February 2019. He was the youngest member of the group of six sentenced to death by Branch 4 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on 14 February 2023.

Salem Mousavi and Habib Deris, regarding whom less details were available, were the other two members of the six condemned to execution for “moharebeh” by Branch 4 of the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on 14 February 2023.

All six are reported to have undergone repeated, severe, and prolonged torture in the time between their arrests and being hauled before the Revolutionary Court.

Their torture-tainted confessions were aired on state media before the commencement of their legal proceedings had even begun and the six had been reportedly brought to the gallows on several occasions before eventually being put to death on Saturday.

Their “confessions” extracted under torture and their grossly unfair “trials”, held behind closed doors with pressure exerted by the Islamic Republic’s security agencies, render the convictions of the six condemned men null and void by any objective and proper legal standard.

Saman Mohammadi Khiyareh was born in 1990 in Sanandaj, Kordestan Province. The Mizan News Agency reported that he was arrested on 30 November 2013, but independent sources state his arrest as having in fact taken place in 2009 when he was just 19 years old. By the time of his execution, he had already been in prison for 16 years. Mr. Mohammadi Khiyareh was initially sentenced to death by Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court – presided over by notorious “hanging judge” Abolqasem Salavati – on charges of “moharebeh; membership of a dissident group; and contact with foreign intelligence services”, but this sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court owing to insufficient evidence and their deeming of his conviction as unsafe. However, the same Revolutionary Court simply re-tried him on the same charges, and his death sentence was reinstated under pressure from the security agencies.

Mr. Mohammadi Khiyareh repeatedly and consistently stated that his confessions to the charges had been obtained under severe torture and psychological pressure, and he explicitly denied having ever participated in armed struggle. He made clear right up to the date of his execution that the charges against him had been fabricated by the Islamic Republic’s security forces and he was tortured to “confess” throughout his interrogations.

CODIR calls for the launching of an immediate campaign by all trade unions in Britain and internationally that advocate for human and democratic rights, to voice their condemnation of the continuing crimes of the Islamic Republic regime in Iran. A massive campaign of protest letters to the Islamic Republic embassies and consulates, as well as the representation bureaus of the Islamic Republic at the United Nations and the European Union, should be initiated as a matter of urgency.

The office of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Iran, Mai Sato – whose remit covers issues including executions, discrimination against women and minorities, suppression of dissent, and due process violations -should also be lobbied to put pressure on the authorities in Iran to fulfil their obligations under the terms of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (to which Iran is a signatory), all UN protocols, as well as international law.

For more information on this campaign and other areas of CODIR’s work please contact:
