{"id":4164,"date":"2025-11-05T08:04:59","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T08:04:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=4164"},"modified":"2025-11-05T08:05:00","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T08:05:00","slug":"codir-condemns-the-arrest-of-progressive-and-left-wing-intellectuals-in-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=4164","title":{"rendered":"CODIR Condemns the Arrest of Progressive and Left-Wing Intellectuals in Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>CALL for ACTION: Protest to the Iranian Embassy against the arrest and detention of Progressive and Left-Wing Intellectuals in Iran<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Professor Parviz Sedaghat, Mahsa Asadollahi-Nezhad, and Shirin Karimi, researchers in the fields of social sciences political economy, were arrested on Monday, 3 November.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The fate of Mohammad Maljou, a well respected academic and researcher remains unknown following his summons to security centers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Security agencies have not yet provided any explanation regarding the reason for the arrest of these left-wing activists.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CODIR is calling all its affiliates and supporters, trade unions and educationalists and generally progressive public opinion in Britain to protest against these arrests and violation of basic human and democratic rights of these academics. &nbsp;Please write to the Iranian Embassy in London and protest against the arrest and detention of Progressive and Left-Wing Intellectuals in Iran and call for their immediate release.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Parviz Sedaghat<\/strong>, economist, publisher, and editor-in-chief of the &#8220;Naqd-e Eghtesad-e Siasi&#8221; (Critique of Political Economy) website, and the summoning of&nbsp;<strong>Mohammad Maljou<\/strong>, economics graduate, researcher, and historian\u2014has been published across social media networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Short reports published on Monday 3 November 2025 in the media, quoting the news group Telegram channel of the Tehran-based&nbsp;<em>Emtedad<\/em>&nbsp;newspaper, state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cEmtedad \u2013 News Group: This morning (3 November), security agents went to the homes of two economists, Mohammad Maljou and Parviz Sedaghat, and confiscated their electronic devices and books.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Security agents arrested Parviz Sedaghat after seizing his belongings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>This comes as Maljou was scheduled to appear before security agencies for questioning today.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>According to Mr. Maljou\u2019s family, after his belongings were confiscated, he proceeded to the location specified for him by the security agencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Currently, there is no information available regarding Maljou&#8217;s status. The reason for Parviz Sedaghat&#8217;s arrest also remains shrouded in ambiguity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><u>Details of Parviz Sedaghat&#8217;s Arrest<\/u><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mahtab Sedaghat<\/strong>, the daughter of Parviz Sedaghat, editor-in-chief of the &#8220;Critique of Political Economy&#8221; magazine, described the details of her father&#8217;s arrest in an interview with&nbsp;<em>Shargh<\/em>&nbsp;newspaper. She stated that agents came to their home around&nbsp;<strong>7:15 AM<\/strong>&nbsp;and arrested him after searching the premises. However, she said, the agents&nbsp;<strong>did not announce any charge<\/strong>, and the family remains unaware of the reason for the arrest or the detaining authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to a question about how the agents entered and whether they presented a judicial warrant, Ms. Sedaghat clarified: &#8220;The truth is I wasn&#8217;t fully aware at that moment. I woke up when they entered and didn&#8217;t clearly understand how they got into the building, but they probably rang the doorbell.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding the arresting agents declaring a charge, she said: &#8220;No mention was made of a charge; they only said they were from the Judiciary.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked if her father had received any prior contact from relevant authorities before the arrest, Ms. Sedaghat asserted: &#8220;As far as I know, no. It is still a question for us why this happened. My father has not been in contact with us up to this moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parviz Sedaghat has translated numerous articles and books into Farsi, including&nbsp;<em>From Right to the City to Rebel Cities<\/em>&nbsp;(David Harvey),&nbsp;<em>Political Economy: Class and State in Capitalism<\/em>&nbsp;(Farhad Nomani and Sohrab Behdad), and&nbsp;<em>Transition from Capitalism<\/em>&nbsp;(Saeed Rahnema). Sedaghat recently spoke on the recent anti-left project in Iran, discussing its formation, goals, participants, and political implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mohammad Maljou<\/strong>&nbsp;is an economics graduate, researcher, and author. A decade ago he spent a year on sabbatical at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London engaging in research and writing. &nbsp; He previously served as a guest researcher at the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam and, after returning to Iran, taught at universities and independent institutions. Maljou is known for his critical research on the economic history of Iran, particularly in the post-revolution period. He has published many books and articles. His works include&nbsp;<em>The Janus-Faced Politics of Political Economy<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Coup D\u2019\u00e9tat Aura of a Revolution<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Scattered Losers: The Decline in the Bargaining Power of Labour Forces in Iran<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Hidden Plunder: The Dispossession of Labour Forces Due to Inflation in Iran<\/em>. Maljou has also published Farsi translations of works by Albert Hirschman, Karl Polanyi, Charles Edward Lindblom, Michael Burawoy, and Edward Palmer Thompson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Arrest of Mahsa Asadollahi-Nezhad and Shirin Karimi<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to reports, on Monday morning, November 2,&nbsp;<strong>Mahsa Asadollahi-Nezhad<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Shirin Karimi<\/strong>, writers and researchers in the field of social sciences, were arrested by security agents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reports indicate that at&nbsp;<strong>7:30 AM<\/strong>, agents arrived at Shirin Karimi&#8217;s home, searched the house, confiscated her books and electronic devices, and took her to an undisclosed location. Her close associates have not yet received any information regarding the reason for her arrest or the authority that issued the order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shirin Karimi<\/strong>&nbsp;was born in 1983 and holds a Master\u2019s degree in Sociology from the University of Tehran. Her works include the book&nbsp;<em>Fifty Years After Savushun: A Critique of the Realism of the Novel Savushun<\/em>&nbsp;and translations of works by Judith Butler and Afsaneh Najmabadi. She has also contributed to the &#8220;Philosophical Books for Teenagers&#8221; series. Karimi and&nbsp;<strong>Mahsa Asadollahi-Nezhad<\/strong>&nbsp;have co-authored and translated numerous articles, including those published on the &#8220;Critique of Political Economy&#8221; website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mahsa Asadollahi-Nezhad<\/strong>, born in 1990, holds a PhD in Political Sociology from Tarbiat Modares University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on studying the history of the formation of the Islamic Republic state from 1978 to 1989.
