{"id":4206,"date":"2025-12-26T04:38:01","date_gmt":"2025-12-26T04:38:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=4206"},"modified":"2025-12-26T04:38:02","modified_gmt":"2025-12-26T04:38:02","slug":"security-council-remains-divided-over-iran-nuclear-programme-sanctions-stay-in-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/codir.net\/?p=4206","title":{"rendered":"Security Council remains divided over Iran nuclear programme, sanctions stay in place"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>23 December 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a meeting to discuss nuclear non-proliferation on Tuesday, the Security Council\u2019s stance on Iran\u2019s nuclear activities remained divided on the issue, split between those who support the reinstatement of sanctions, and the members who believe the sanctions should be permanently lifted, whilst questioning the legality of the meeting itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite intensified diplomatic efforts during the second half of 2025, there was no agreement on the way forward regarding the Iran nuclear programme,\u201d concluded the UN\u2019s chief diplomat, Rosemary DiCarlo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms. DiCarlo \u2013 the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs \u2013 reminded the Council that the best option for the international community is a negotiated settlement that would ensure a peaceful Iranian nuclear programme and provide sanctions relief. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the heart of the split between the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/main.un.org\/securitycouncil\/\">Security Council<\/a>&nbsp;members is a dispute over the legitimacy of holding meetings related to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, formally the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), an agreement to limit Iran\u2019s nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran signed the agreement alongside the Council\u2019s five permanent members &#8211;
