NetBlocks has reported that Iran’s connectivity to the outside world remains at approximately one per cent of its normal level—a situation that has effectively minimised public access to information and crippled the ability of individuals to communicate with one another.

The United Nations’ Independent International Fact-Finding Mission has called on the Iranian government to immediately restore internet and mobile connectivity and to end the “violent suppression.” The Mission also expressed grave concern over reports indicating that the Supreme National Security Council has ordered security forces to carry out a “decisive and unrestrained” crackdown.

“Once again we see the only way that the regime in Iran can deal with dissent is by the use of lethal force”, said CODIR General Secretary, Gawain Little, “the dictatorship is clearly rocking as the demands of the people for better economic conditions have rapidly become demands for an end to the Islamic Republic.”

CODIR Assistant General Secretary, Jamshid Ahmadi, has also expressed concern that many media outlets have bought into fabricated narratives favouring the return of the monarchy.

“These media outlets have provided the regime’s leadership with a pretext to label the people’s protest uprising as the work of the US and Israel,” said Mr Ahmadi, “by inflating the significance of monarchist currents, they seek to create obstacles in the process of forging solidarity and practical links between progressive and national forces.”

CODIR’s sources inside Iran have stressed that the actions of the theocratic dictatorship over decades has been the primary driver behind protests, rather than demands for the return of the monarchy or the restoration of the throne.

Reports from the United States, that Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with senior administration officials to discuss “specific options” for responding to developments in Iran, add to the complications on the ground. These options reportedly include further sanctions, cyber operations, and the feasibility of deploying Starlink.

Progressive forces inside the country are continuing to call for the end to the dictatorship, based upon the desire of the people for democracy, while opposing foreign intervention.

CODIR will continue to provide support and solidarity with those progressive forces on the basis of the people’s demand for peace, democracy and social justice.

ENDS

Further information for Editors

Contact Information for CODIR:-

Postal Address:
B.M.CODIR
London
WC1N 3XX
UK

Further information on CODIR

CODIR is the Committee for the Defence of the Iranian People’s Rights. It has been established since 1981 and has consistently campaigned to expose human rights abuses in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

CODIR has worked closely with the trade union movement in the UK, the peace movement, all major political parties and Amnesty International to press the case for an end to torture in Iran’s prisons. Major trade unions in Britain are affiliated to CODIR and support its campaign for peace, human and democratic rights, and social justice in Iran.

CODIR has published Iran Today, its quarterly journal, since 1981, explaining the latest developments in Iran and the most effective way that the British public opinion could demonstrate its solidarity with the people of Iran.

In recent years CODIR has worked closely with Stop the War Coalition and has been vocal against any form of foreign intervention in the internal affairs of the nation.

Office

13th January 2026 Press release For immediate us The Committee for the Defence of Iranian People’s Rights (CODIR) has expressed concern at the rapid escalation of killings by the Iran’s security forces over recent days, as protests against poverty and […]

[8,10,5

post-4247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-codir-says","category-features","category-news-analysis
["GET
