The Committee for the Defence of Iranian People\u2019s Rights (CODIR) has warned that the renewed escalation of the conflict between the US\/Israeli axis and Iran has already hit the Iranian people hard and is likely to worsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States has tightened the sanctions regime on Iran, with comparisons being drawn with the situation that faced Iraq from the early 1990s onwards. In addition, the US is now looking to hit Iran militarily in fits and bursts, due to concerns in US military circles over the capacity of the US to maintain the type of bombardment witnessed during the 40 Day War, launched on 28 February this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump has said that while the US is prepared to attack Iran “any time we want”, he does not think that the renewed campaign against Iran would last “too long”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, US action  has already resulted in tragedy for Iranian families. The US, without provocation, has begun to target civilian centres across the south of the country, notably hitting a wedding party in Kuhestak, killing at least four and maiming 67 others who were in attendance. The Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, accused the US of committing another war crime and the Iranian Red Crescent has written to the ICC calling for legal action to be taken against the US following the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CODIR General Secretary, Gawain Little, robustly condemned the US tactic of targeting civilians, stating,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have concerns about any civilian casualties in war but in this instance the location was nowhere near anything that could be remotely conceived of as a military target. Like the killings of school children in Minab, on the first day of the US aggression in February, the US must be held to account for actions which clearly constitute war crimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the US action Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has said that Israel’s mission in Iran is “not yet finished”, stating in an interview for Israeli news that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“All of our systems under my direction are working to overthrow this regime. Our pilots were there and they can be there at any moment. We have not yet finished the job. We can be there at any moment. We will defeat this regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked what defeat meant, Netanyahu said: “We will bring it down. It’s already on its last legs anyway.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The combined impact of war and the sanctions imposed upon Iran is having a devastating impact upon the Iranian economy and consequently the Iranian people. Iran\u2019s currency has repeatedly hit new lows since the US and Israel launched the war on Iran more than six months ago. It has lost about half of its value in just one year owing to the tightening sanctions and the US-Israeli attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade union activists in Iran have sounded the alarm that the current minimum wage in the country equates to a mere 10% of the actual cost of a basic household “livelihood basket” (covering baseline food, housing, and living expenses), which is the threshold usually used to set the minimum wage in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Far from being the saviour of the Iranian people, as Donald Trump originally claimed US\/Israeli action would be, the reality is that as a consequence of the war and sanctions absolute poverty is skyrocketing in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CODIR condemns the ongoing US\/Israeli aggression against Iran and will continue to provide support and solidarity with  progressive forces inside Iran, on the basis of the people\u2019s demand for peace, democracy and social justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
