Your Excellency,

Tomaj Salehi

I write as General Secretary of the National Education Union (NEU), the largest education trade union in the UK and in Europe.

Members of my union have been deeply concerned to read the news reports that a death sentence has been imposed on the young Iranian musician Tomaj Salehi. Mr Salehi is well known to young people in the UK and is widely admired both for his music and for his determination to uphold human rights for all.

We are aware that the Supreme Court had previously ruled for clemency in Mr Salehi’s case and we would ask that you intervene to ensure that the execution of Mr Salehi  does not go ahead. It is the measure of the strength of any regime that it tolerates dissent and upholds human rights especially for those with whom it may disagree. If the death sentence is enacted, the Iranian regime’s standing among the global community will decline still further.

The eyes of the world are on Iran right now and we urge you to show mercy and to prevent the execution of Mr Salehi. The NEU asks for your prompt and decisive intervention on this urgent matter.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Kebede

General Secretary
