The Committee for the Defence of Iranian People’s Rights warns of escalation danger in Iran war
THE Committee for the Defence of Iranian People’s Rights (Codir) has issued a warning that the exchange of missile strikes between Israel and Iran could result in a dangerous escalation of the conflict, threaten the already fragile ceasefire and undermine talks for an end to the war, being held between the United States and Iran.
While the Israeli regime claims the strikes on Iran are in response to Iranian missiles targeting northern Israel, the Iranian dictatorship is claiming strikes are in response to Israeli bombing of Beirut, in violation of the existing ceasefire agreement.
While Iranian strikes tend to have limited impact in Israel, due to sophisticated US backed air defence systems, the Israeli strikes on Lebanon and inside Iran are using more powerful weaponry, resulting in significant civilian casualties.
Israel hit the important Karoon Petrochemical Complex in Iran yesterday morning. The damage would be catastrophic to the many firms that desperately need products from this complex to be able to function. Israel is trying to destroy the Iranian economy, make millions unemployed and create an important barrier for societal cohesion.
The Israeli Defence Force (IDF), which the BBC and other media outlets consistently fail to acknowledge is the principal aggressor in the war, have claimed that the strikes on Iran “further enhances the Israeli Air Force’s freedom of action in Iranian air space.”
Reports suggest that US President Donald Trump urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to go ahead with the strikes on Iran, given the stage of discussions between the US and Iran.
Reports from inside Israel suggest that Netanyahu is concerned about any potential deal between the US and Iran, considering it to be to Israel’s disadvantage, though final details have not yet emerged. With elections in Israel scheduled for October, Netanyahu clearly sees the continuation of the war as his best chance of re-election, by talking up Iran as an “existential threat” to the state of Israel.
“This latest aggression plunges the people of the region back into a live exchange of ballistic fire that is disastrous for humanity and the environment,” said Codir general secretary Gawain Little.
“The possibility of a renewed escalation of the war and a breakdown of the already fragile ceasefire, once again threatens the lives of working people in the Middle East, who need peace, security and stability in order to rebuild their lives.”
As well as the strikes in southern Iran, more recent reports suggest that several explosions have been heard in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
If confirmed as being strikes by the IDF, Codir warns that the level of danger in the region will have increased significantly. Little commented that, “continued aggression from the US/Israeli axis must be stopped and any return to the past level of hostilities vigorously opposed.”
Codir will continue to provide support and solidarity with progressive forces inside Iran, on the basis of the people’s demand for peace, democracy and social justice.
